This time last year, and for the millennia that preceded, the area around Sheikh Zayed Road (one of Dubai’s main thoroughfares), was sand and more recently concrete. This time next year it will be a canal.
After spending a year or two in the Emirates the pace of development starts to hit you. I say hit you as one day you’ll be on a road you didn’t know existed and delaying your meeting by fifteen minutes while you find your way around. Sheikh Zayed Road is the one with all the tall buildings on, it’s the city postcard of Dubai. So, you may appreciate the scale of the project when I say it is connecting Dubai Creek to the Arabian Gulf. How? Simple, this is Dubai. They diverted traffic for a few months and built a bridge for the canal to flow under. That bridge is now being used and the canal is expected to see water this year (after two more multi-lane bridges are built for the other arterial roads!).
Wow factor aside, the Dubai Canal project is an effective way of increasing revenue. As we know, property that sits on water commands a premium. Dubai is adding more water. Dubai as an Emirate is working to move away from oil dependence (some would say at 95% non-oil GDP it has already done so), and projects like the Dubai Canal are innovative ways to take something that already exists and make more money from it.
If your fear of doing business in Dubai relates to a drop in the oil markets, it’s an unfounded fear indeed.
