Medical and wellness tourism in the UAE

Prior to the outbreak of Covid-19, it is estimated that the global health tourism industry generated revenues of approx. GBP 22.9 billion in 2019. By 2027, this industry is expected to be valued at GBP 146.9 billion largely due to the growing demand for healthcare services across the world.

With the healthcare industry in recent years emerging as one of the key sectors for economic growth of the UAE, the medical tourism market for instance generated GBP 2.3 billion in 2019 to the economy. Dubai and Abu Dhabi ranked 6th and 8th respectively in the latest Medical Tourism Index Ranking for ‘Best global destinations for medical tourism’.

The UAE looks set to further its position and benefit from inbound medical tourism into the country due to the increase in international visitors seeking treatment ranging from major surgery to cosmetic corrections to rehabilitation. Back by government initiatives including the Abu Dhabi Medical Tourism portal and Dubai Health Experience, the UAE’s potential as a medical tourism destination is further supported by the wider tourism ecosystem that exist in the country such as entertainment, attractions, hotels, etc.
