GITEX is arguably the most anticipated and publicised non-sport event in the UAE. Why? Because it’s a technology discount haven!
GITEX has two parts. Technology Week, and GITEX Shopper. Both happen in October, the former is a trade event that is increasingly important to UK tech companies, the latter a consumer event (GITEX Shopper is twice a year).
GITEX Shopper differs from other tech events because retailers compete for attention, literally. Each year there is such a furore over deals that newspapers are full of details on who is giving what and for how much. In 2014 one retailer sold a Nikon camera kit for AED4000, and threw in an iPhone, a 500GB hard drive, and a 7” tablet.
But it’s not just technology on offer. Yes, you can buy a phone and they’ll give you a free TV, but you can also buy a tablet and get a three day package holiday…or you can buy a TV and get a BMW (you did read that correctly, you could buy a TV and they retailer gave you a free car).
The excitement that GITEX creates is unmatched, and because of it, twice a year, Dubai goes crazy!
