The dairy sector in the UAE is at an all-time high. Milk and milk products are a major component of the UAE diet. The largest product category is fresh unflavoured white milk with a 41% volume share, followed by Laban (butter milk) with 21%. 80% of dairy sales come from four key product categories: fresh unflavoured white milk, Laban, yoghurt, and cheese. According to a report by Zenith International, dairy product sales grew by more than 50% between 2007 and 2012 to US$5.8 billion in the GCC (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Kuwait and Oman).
Organic food is gaining popularity in the UAE, with dairy products suited for children being the most popular. The UK predominantly supplies the upper end of the market for dairy products. UK brands of dairy products, particularly yoghurts and specialty cheeses, can be found in most retail outlets in the UAE.
The BCB recently helped a UK dairy company, a2 Milk Company, by introducing their products to major food & drink retailers and distributors in the UAE. The BCB arranged nine meetings for them during their visit to the UAE in November 2015 and they are now in talks with most of the major food & drink companies in the UAE to introduce their products in this region in the first half of 2016.
