BCB’s March Newsletter: Ramadan Kareem

22 Mar, 2023

Good Morning

The outcome of last night’s UAE moonsighting committee meeting means that Ramadan is now confirmed to start tomorrow. This is one of the idiosyncrasies of Islam’s Holy Month in that, not only does it move forward by 11 days every year, but that the actual start date depends on the physical siting of the crescent moon.

We include a couple of Ramadan-related articles here to help inform you on some of the nuances and factors involved.

In general, there are some important cultural sensitivities to be aware of if you’re visiting or doing business in the Middle East at that time…respecting the proscription on food & drink during daylight hours is the most obvious one, but how many of us remember that this should apply if you’re on a Teams call too? That cup of tea can wait.

And food & drink is central to Ramadan as the second article outlines. The month sees the highest consumption and spend on food in the whole year, driven by a number of specific occasions and rituals around daily meals like iftar and suhoor.

We wish you Ramadan Kareem.

Regards
Joe
