The London Design Festival 2015

13 Oct, 2015 - Consumer & Retail

The London Design Festival is an annual celebration of design across the city. 100 Percent Design (23rd to 26th September) is regarded as UKs largest trade event; it had colour as it central theme this year. Attending in my BCB capacity, I was stationed at the UKTI stand and found two of the most common questions to be: “Will this work in the UAE?”, and, “How can we take advantage of the Expo 2020 opportunity??”

The global Expo event was also a feature during the seminar, but more specifically Expo 2015, hosted by Milan. Designer Wolfgang Buttress spoke about his creation, The Bee-Hive, which (until the end of this month) adorns the UK pavilion. My colleague Tamreez attended and her pictures of the structure are below.

The inspiration for the Bee-Hive was indeed a bee hive, which is increasingly considered the ‘barometer for the health of the planet’. The pavilion aptly addressed the expo theme of “Feeding the planet, Energy for Life” encouraging visitors to reflect and address the challenges of sustainability in water, food and energy – an immersive and surreal experience for visitors.

The UK UAE connection is evident at Expo 2015 as the British firm Foster & Partners was responsible for designing the UAE pavilion, contributing to the 76% growth since 2009 foe the UK design market.

London made its name in the swinging sixties as the worlds fashion and design leader, with music, art, and experimentation at the forefront of the conscious mind. Whilst the colours may not be quite as bright, the industry itself is just as vibrant.
